What Does P0765 Mean?

P0765 is a diagnostic trouble code indicating: Shift Solenoid D. This code relates to the transmission system. It has been reported in NHTSA complaints across 3 different vehicle models.

The automatic transmission is controlled by the TCM using input from speed sensors, temperature sensors, and pressure sensors. When the TCM detects a fault, it may activate limp mode (2nd or 3rd gear only). Shift solenoids are electromagnetic valves inside the valve body controlling hydraulic fluid flow. Modern transmissions use 4-8 solenoids in combination for each gear. Solenoid failures are often caused by contaminated fluid β€” worn clutch material and degraded fluid create varnish that sticks solenoids. Always check transmission fluid first: level, color (red/pink good, brown/black bad), and smell (burnt = internal damage). Transmission DTCs escalate fast β€” a $200 solenoid fix can become a $3000-$5000 rebuild if ignored.

Real Owner Reports

From NHTSA complaint database β€” actual owner descriptions.

"WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE AT 50 MPH, IT SUDDENLY SLAMS INTO THIRD GEAR CAUSING A VIOLENT JERKING AND SUDDEN DECELERATION. THE ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON AND THE CAR REMAINS IN 3RD GEAR FOR A PERIOD OF TIME AND THEN RETURNS TO NORMAL. THIS OCCURRED TWO DAYS IN A ROW. THE SECOND TIME I WAS ALMOST REAR ENDE"

β€” Hyundai Sonata owner, 07/05/2010

"THIS AND OTHER MODELS OF KIA/HYUNDAI HAVE A VERY COMMON ISSUE WITH AUTO TRANS A4CF1/2 ELECTRICA HARNESS THAT FAILS PREMATURELY AND FREQUENTLY, INCLUDING TEMP SENSOR INTERGRATED INTO IT. CAR NOW HAS 94K AND CODE P0713 FOR THE TEMP SENSOR FAILURE AND RECENTLY P0765 FOR SELONOID D, WHICH IS ALL RELATED"

β€” Kia Soul owner, 10/30/2018

"VEHICLE WILL NOT SHIFT INTO 3RD GEAR. THIS STARTED WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE IN TOWN AND NOW ONLY RUNS IN 1ST AND 2ND GEAR. DIAGNOSTIC CODE P0765 (SHIFT SOLENOID D) IS THE ONLY CODE SHOWING. OTHER (03-05) JEEPS WERE RECALLED FOR THE SAME PROBLEM."

β€” Jeep Wrangler owner, 03/05/2016

Diagnostic Tips

  1. Check fluid level and condition FIRST
  2. Multiple codes suggest valve body or internal damage
  3. Monitor solenoid duty cycle with scan tool
  4. Solenoids often accessible by removing pan

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a shift solenoid?
Electromagnetic valve controlling hydraulic fluid flow for gear selection. Modern transmissions have 4-8 solenoids.
Can I drive in limp mode?
Only to a repair facility. Limp mode prevents damage but causes excessive heat with extended use.
How much for solenoid replacement?
Individual: $15-$100 parts. Packs: $50-$300. Labor: $150-$400. Total: $200-$700.
Can fluid change fix it?
Sometimes. If solenoid sticks from contaminated fluid, fresh manufacturer fluid resolves ~30-40% of cases.

What To Do Next

Possible Fixes

  • πŸ”§ Replace shift solenoid or pack
  • πŸ”§ Transmission fluid flush with manufacturer fluid
  • πŸ”§ Repair wiring to transmission
  • πŸ”§ Replace valve body

  2. 2
    Check for recalls

Go to nhtsa.gov/recalls and enter your VIN. Free repairs if covered.

  3. 3
    Get a professional diagnosis

A code alone doesn't identify the exact failed part. A diagnostic ($50–$150) pinpoints the root cause.
